And now, moving on to wedding number 3 of the weekend, we have the BEAUTIFUL Melia & Ryan!! Cannot get over their golden hour photos 😍Union Mills Homestead was a stunning historical park with countless backdrops to offer. These two really put the cherry on top of our busy weekend.
We had quite the busy wedding weekend but we poured our heart and soul into every wedding! Here are some favorites from Saturday. Rita & Ryan are the sweetest couple. We met them for their engagement session at Harper's Ferry last year and we knew their wedding would be amazing. Rita's parents got married at this same country club 29 years ago, too!! We had fun recreating some pictures.
We LOVED finally photographing at District Winery in DC, a stunning waterfront venue off the Anacostia River. Aida & Bryan’s wedding was full of so many amazing traditions that we feel lucky to have witnessed - including Ethiopian and Jewish customs!
We absolutely loved witnessing countless beautiful customs at this wedding last Saturday at Rose Hill Manor is Leesburg! It was a warm, beautiful day and the guests never left the dance floor the entire night.
Family sessions are the perfect Father's Day gift! And fun fact - it was raining during all of these photos yesterday. Such a cute family :)
When Gracie reached out to us about doing photography and videography for her wedding we were so excited. Gracie is a professional photographer herself (Gracie Withers Photography) and it is SO flattering any time a fellow professional in the industry expresses interest in working with us. We met up with Gracie and Dan a few months ago and loved how we clicked. We will be photographing/filming their wedding next May! Last week we went out to Bears Den in Bluemont VA for their engagement session. We had no idea what to expect in terms of sunset and whether or not there would even be one. Well, there definitely WAS a sunset. We had such a great time with them, trying out fun new poses, climbing rocks, and chatting. We even started the engagement session with some beer from Bear Chase Brewery! Enjoy some of our favorite shots - -
Still in bliss from Saturday's wedding at the Four Seasons in Georgetown! Ali and Nemanja threw a perfectly elegant, classic, and intimate wedding with their closest loved ones. Thankfully we were able to find windows of time without rain, too. We had a great time capturing the day. Wow what a gorgeous couple!
Our good friends visited this weekend to hang and to have us take some maternity photos. Baby Lachlan is due on July 4th - how fun! We loved walking around woodsy Reston on Saturday morning and using the variety of backdrops it always has to offer.
Congratulations to the Reedy's! Such a beautiful day with such a kind couple. Thank you Christine and Tyler for having us capture your amazing day at the beautiful new venue!
The J's are married!! Jordyn and Justin’s wedding yesterday at Upper Shirley Vineyards was the perfect way to kick off our Spring season. It was so great to capture yet another wedding with so many familiar faces from childhood, too. Thank you so much for having us, what a stunning day!
How stunning are Olivia and Mike at this maternity session from the weekend?? We filmed their wedding video in 2017 and now they are entering a new chapter of their lives. So exciting!
Photographing amongst the DC cherry blossoms is like photographing in a fairytale. It was ironically really fun to be out there at sunrise sharing the space with hundreds of other pros doing their portrait sessions.. all respecting each other's space and just soaking in this short-lived spectacle. Karen and Herbert crushed their session, too!
This in-home newborn session was the sweetest. Newborn sessions are not always easy, but in the end they are so rewarding. All the hard work, crying, cleaning up certain messes (lol), etc makes the final product so even more appreciated! I just love how much he looks like his sonogram, too <3
We are thrilled to now be offering wedding albums...Ultra thick paper, lay-flat design, customizable linen color and cover design. For a limited time only we are offering these albums at a discount to any past client! You choose your favorites, and we do the rest. A wonderful anniversary gift. Please inquire for details
Another frigid session but totally worth it! The crowds were smaller and the sunset was stunning. These two work in politics in DC so the Capitol was the perfect backdrop. Can’t wait for their wedding this fall!
We found a new go-to engagement location at Cabell’s Mill in Centreville! It had so much to offer from fields to creeks to a cute well. These two braved some pretty frigid weather on Saturday but it was all totally worth it. The sun (and their adorable dog, Snow) behaved so well. Usually we do sessions closer to sunset but there’s something special about this bright, vivid midday light in this session that we’ve fallen in love with.
Our wedding was not cheap, but we definitely saved thousands by doing some simple tricks that I’d like to share. It IS possible to have your elegant dream wedding while cutting costs! The key is to know what you can and can’t skimp on. Our wedding was by no means perfect, but I definitely have some takeaways from the whole experience that I think would be super useful to a lot of future brides. Let’s dive in, shall we?
DO: Try front and back invitations, and make your RSVP option online only to save paper. No one will be offended!
DO: Scour internet garage sales and local thrift stores - you’d be surprised what you can find! Then reach out to friends and family to help you decorate those things.
DON’T: Skimp on your wedding dress, as long as we are talking about just going several hundred to $1k over budget. Ish ;) If you find your dream dress, get it. You don’t want to look back on your photos with regret.
Also, try and stay away from a fit & flare style like mine because it requires a lot more alterations than something like an A-line, because it needs to fit everywhere just perfectly. Live and learn!
DO: Have a smaller cake to cut into, and serve cupcakes to your guests. More flavors, less plates, less cost, no forks, more fun!
We had funfetti, red velvet, pumpkin cream cheese, and chocolate Guinness. I don’t think we could have gotten away with those 4 flavors on a tiered cake!
DON’T: Skimp on gifts for your wedding party. Show them you are grateful!
DO: More candles over more flowers. Flower costs can add up very fast. Candles are more affordable, they create such a cozy environment, and you can resell the votives after the wedding.
DO: Barter. Do you work in the industry? Reach out to vendors to see if they would like professional videos or photos for their company in exchange for their services! We bartered for both our photobooth and my hair.
Yay bartering!
DON’T: Splurge on wedding shoes. No one really sees them. But DO make sure they are comfy and at least photogenic for your detail shots.
DO: Help out your bridesmaids by searching for affordable dresses if possible! These were $90 on Lulus.
DO: Help small businesses on Etsy for things like custom signage. But save by just ordering the digital proof, and then printing yourself!
DON’T: Settle for a mediocre photographer. Your memories of your wedding details will sadly fade away but you will ALWAYS have photos to look back on. So they better be good. Thanks Paperbird Photography!
DON’T: Get your veil at your dress shop. This is a detail like shoes where most people don’t notice the difference. Look online!
DO: Consider a mobile caterer, such as brick oven pizza! Everyone loves pizza. However, with a mobile company you will likely need to add a supplemental catering company to take care of trash removal, moving tables, and more. So think carefully.
DON’T: Skimp on entertainment. They can make or break the vibe of your entire reception. Our band happened to be just as affordable as your average DJ, so don’t immediately rule out a live band, either!
DON’T: Don’t don’t don’t leave out your loved ones to save on costs by having a smaller headcount. I’m not talking about that friend from high school you don’t talk to anymore. But think long and hard about whether you would EVER look back on your wedding and regret not inviting a certain loved one.
DO: Put your friends and family to work! They want to help, and the memories you make while preparing for the wedding together are unbeatable.
See?!
Lovely menu created for us by a family friend.
DO: Do you know anyone who has a talent? My sister in law did my makeup and I saved a lot of money by having her do mine. Just make sure you do a trial!
After. Much better.
Enjoy some favorite shots from our OWN wedding on October 27th! It felt so amazing to be on the other side of the wedding process. It was a stressful few months leading up to the big day but all the hard work was worth it. HUGE thank you to our amazing photographers, Caroline and Amy with Paperbird Photography.
Just some of many highlights from the day: A huge rain storm stopped an hour before the outdoor ceremony (and the sun even said hello), brick oven pizza was consumed, there was one tree that looked like Fall and that's all we needed, almost all 800 of our first cousins attended, and everyone danced the night away in a cozy barn on a frigid, muddy day.. mostly in the form of dance circles
Saturday's maternity session took place basically in our back yard! We finished up right before the snow storm started and although that would've been pretty, we were cold enough 😄Very excited as well to photograph the newborn in a few weeks, which based on these two, will be a beautiful baby!
